The government has announced that the earliest date a Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) member will be able to take their pension will increase from age 55 to 57 with affect from 6 April 2028.

This change won’t apply if a member takes their pension early due to ill health.

Protections

Our members could be protected from this increase to the pension age if they joined before 4 November 2021. They might also be protected if they transferred in a previous pension into the LGPS and certain conditions are met.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) set the rules for the LGPS. It has not yet confirmed if it will allow members who quality for protection to take their LGPS pension before age 57 from 6 April 2028 onwards.

We’ll update this website when DLUHC changes the LGPS rules to reflect the increase in the normal minimum pension age.
